About K4DMN

I'm Darren, a portable operator in Atlanta, GA.

Most of my operating happens outdoors, in programs that send hams to interesting places: Parks on the Air (POTA), Summits on the Air (SOTA), and US Islands (USI). I like the digital modes, especially FT8, FT4, JS8Call, and WSPR, usually at QRP power, 5 to 10 watts.

I also sail. The boat side of things lives at Skipper D, and sometimes the two meet, like monitoring a repeater from the cockpit on Lake Lanier.

Emergency communications

I joined NFARES, the North Fulton Amateur Radio Emergency Service, the local ARES group, in 2012, the year I was licensed. Over the years I've checked in to its Sunday night nets, more often in some stretches than others. I've also worked NFARES events: the 2012 Simulated Emergency Test (SET), and providing communications for bike rides and Fourth of July events.
